Riding Lessons are given by a riding instructor - someone whose job it is to teach methods of horse riding (and also horse care) to beginners and improve the intermediate and advanced rider's technique and style.
Instructors may work at a riding school or training centre, at a college or university equestrian studies programme, or may be freelance and travel from stable to stable.
In much of the world, there are no formal requirements or licensing for riding instructors but in the UK there are two recognised bodies awarding qualifications: the BHS (British Horse Society) and the ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools).
The best riding lessons (and instructors) will teach you how to understand what a horse is thinking, feeling, and how to care for them. This doesn't just happen sitting on the horse, it can also be learned while spending time next to the horse on the ground in a lesson.
Learning to ride a horse is one of the best things you can do. If you're a total beginner we recommend calling up a number of different schools and asking whether they have suitable horses for new riders - with an even temperament!
The British Horse Society Approvals Scheme assists riders and horse owners in selecting an establishment which will suit their needs. All BHS Approved Establishments are inspected at least once a year and establishments only pass if they have met the most stringent standards of instruction, safety and horse care.
